It was probably the last time Alabama will see Joe Paterno on an opposing sideline; it was fitting that Alabama gave Paterno a send-off worthy of the old-school, smashmouth style of football represented in the two teams’ distinctly not-modern-at-all uniforms.
This is Alabama-Penn State at its historical finest, Joe Paterno against Nick Saban, old-style school vs. old-style school. The Nittany Lions would very much like to make amends for last year’s disappointing performance in Tuscaloosa, a game in which Penn State never really felt competitive.

While Auburn was busy getting shocked out of its socks against Utah State, Alabama was reading from a script against Kent State in Tuscaloosa Saturday.
Alabama head coach Nick Saban probably doesn’t want anyone to talk about Kent State as a “tune-up” opponent, but honesty demands the Golden Flashes be described as such. Kent State had an ineffective offense in 2010, but was one of the country’s best teams at defending the run.

In Week 1, LSU and Oregon highlight the game schedule, with Georgia and Boise State not far behind. Most teams are facing weak sisters, however.
