In a high-scoring affair at the Moody Center in Austin, the AP #2 Alabama Crimson Tide secured a 103-80 victory over the Texas Longhorns on February 11, 2025. This win marked Alabama’s seventh consecutive triumph, bolstering their Southeastern Conference (SEC) record to 10-1 and an overall standing of 21-3. Conversely, Texas fell to 15-10 overall and 4-8 in SEC play.
Alabama’s offense was spearheaded by sophomore forward Jarin Stevenson, who achieved a career-high 22 points, connecting on 7-of-8 field goals, including 4-of-5 from beyond the arc. Guard Aden Holloway contributed 18 points off the bench, while guard Mark Sears matched that with 18 points of his own. The Crimson Tide showcased exceptional shooting efficiency, hitting 61.8% from the field and an impressive 58.8% from three-point range.
The Longhorns were led by freshman guard Tre Johnson, who posted a game-high 24 points on 9-of-17 shooting, including 4-of-8 from three-point territory. Graduate forward Jayson Kent provided a season-best 19 points off the bench, connecting on 6-of-9 field goals. Despite these individual performances, Texas struggled collectively, shooting 42% from the field and 36.4% from deep.
The game commenced with Texas taking an early 7-2 lead following a layup by Tramon Mark at the 17:36 mark. Alabama responded with an 8-0 run, highlighted by a three-pointer from Labaron Philon, seizing a 10-7 advantage. The Crimson Tide extended their lead to 49-31 by halftime, courtesy of a 14-3 run to close the first half.
In the second half, Alabama maintained its momentum, with their lead swelling to 80-57 following a three-pointer by Stevenson at the 7:49 mark. Texas made efforts to narrow the gap, but the deficit proved insurmountable. The Crimson Tide’s dominance was further evidenced by their 41-25 rebounding advantage and a 34-32 edge in points scored in the paint.
Alabama’s head coach, Nate Oats, expressed satisfaction with his team’s shooting performance, stating, “This was a game where you wish you could shoot it like this all the time. We almost shot 60 percent from three and 62 percent from the field.” He also acknowledged areas needing improvement, noting, “We had way too many turnovers again and that has become a major issue with us.”
On the opposing side, Texas head coach Rodney Terry focused on his team’s development, remarking, “I’m all about trying to get my team better.”
Despite the loss, the Longhorns forced 17 Alabama turnovers and capitalized with a 26-13 advantage in points off turnovers.
Looking ahead, Alabama is set to host AP #1 Auburn on Saturday, February 15, in a highly anticipated matchup between the nation’s top two teams. This game presents an opportunity for the Crimson Tide to further solidify their standing atop the SEC. The game will be the first 1/2 matchup in SEC history and only the fifth D-1 in-conference 1/2 matchup in NCAA history.
