Bama Basketball Game Preview: Alabama travels to NC to take on the Tarheels in Top 20 SEC-ACC matchup

The Alabama Crimson Tide men’s basketball team is set to face the North Carolina Tar Heels tonight in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. This matchup features two prominent programs aiming to solidify their standings in the early stages of the 2024-25 season.

Alabama enters the game with a 6-2 record, having recently secured a notable 85-80 overtime victory against No. 6 Houston at the Players Era Festival in Las Vegas.

However, the team faces a significant setback with the loss of guard Latrell Wrightsell Jr., who is out for the season due to a ruptured Achilles tendon.

Wrightsell had been a key contributor, averaging 11.5 points per game and leading the team with a 42.2% shooting accuracy from beyond the arc.

North Carolina holds a 4-3 record, with recent performances highlighting both their resilience and areas needing improvement. The Tar Heels showcased a remarkable comeback in a 92-90 win over Dayton, erasing a 21-point deficit—the second-largest comeback in school history.

However, they have also experienced challenges, such as a 94-91 overtime loss to Michigan State, where slow starts have been a recurring issue.

Alabama’s offense is spearheaded by guard Mark Sears, who delivered a season-high 24 points in the victory over Houston.

Forward Grant Nelson has been instrumental as well, contributing 13 points and 10 rebounds in the same game. The Crimson Tide’s defense has been effective, holding opponents to a 39.3% field goal percentage in their win against McNeese State.

North Carolina’s backcourt is led by RJ Davis, who scored 13 points in their dominant 107-55 win over American University.

Freshman guard Elliot Cadeau has also made significant contributions, adding 18 points in the same game. The Tar Heels’ defense, however, has shown vulnerabilities, allowing an average of 80.1 points per game, ranking 332nd nationally.

A critical factor in this matchup will be Alabama’s ability to capitalize on North Carolina’s defensive lapses. The Crimson Tide’s offensive depth, with multiple players capable of scoring in double figures, could exploit the Tar Heels’ defensive inconsistencies.

Conversely, North Carolina’s resilience in overcoming large deficits demonstrates their offensive potential. If the Tar Heels can address their slow starts and tighten their defense, they have the capability to challenge Alabama’s offensive rhythm.
