A-Day Review: Not much has changed in 10 years

By Jess Nicholas TideFans.com Editor-In-Chief April 16, 2016 Saturday’s A-Day spring contest, the 10th of Nick Saban’s Bama career, was as much a time for reflection as it was an opportunity to look forward to the 2016 season. Alabama didn’t pack out Bryant-Denny Stadium, but it did appear to reverse a trend of declining attendance, […]

Spring Football: QB battle may follow familiar path

Comments Off on Spring Football: QB battle may follow familiar path

By Jess Nicholas TideFans.com Editor-In-Chief April 2, 2016 With Alabama’s first spring scrimmage in the books, the best way to evaluate the quarterback battle at this point is to say that everything old is new again. When Alabama said its goodbyes to Jake Coker following its win over Clemson in the National Championship Game in […]

By Jess Nicholas TideFans.com Editor-In-Chief March 5, 2016 Prior to the point at which Jonathan Allen and Tim Williams announced their intent to return to Alabama for their senior seasons, the defensive line was Alabama’s most significant problem spot heading into spring practice. With Allen and Williams back, however, attention turns to the other open […]

By Chris DePew TideFans.com staff Feb. 20, 2016 Alabama picked a bad day for its worst home performance of the conference season, as Mississippi State exacted revenge for its overtime loss to begin the month with a 67-61 upset at Coleman Coliseum. What did we learn today?: Even obvious trap games can snare a blue […]

Rating the 2016 SEC recruiting classes

The addition of Jamar King at the last moment brought Alabama up to a rating of “Excellent” in the “Needs Filled” category; otherwise, it would have been hard to rank the Crimson Tide No. 1 in the country overall over Florida State. Alabama, over the past few years, has finished with at least one position group’s worth of signees somewhere to be called best-in-class; in 2016, Alabama did it for at least one position group and maybe as many as three. Alabama got the nation’s best linebacker haul, picking up three 10.0-rated prospects on Signing Day: Ben Davis, Lyndell Wilson and Terrell Hall. But Alabama also was in the running for best OL class, headed by Jonah Williams

Recruiting: Alabama’s 2016 class goes the blue-collar route

Alabama signed seven players who ranked a perfect 10.0 on TideFans.com/NARCAS’s 10-point scale, down from 11 a year ago. Alabama’s 25 signees averaged a rating of 9.79, a bit off last year’s 9.86, which tied for the highest-measured Alabama class in school history, along with the 2012 class. Alabama was able to maintain a high ranking nationally, relative to other top classes, in part due to the lack of concentration of the top available players at any one school.

Comments Off on Recruiting 2016: Bama’s final attack plan as Signing Day approaches

By Jess Nicholas TideFans.com Editor-In-Chief Jan. 31, 2016 Those who cover college football recruiting have found something as rare as a flawless diamond: Consensus. Consensus, in this case, on a concept – the 2015-2016 recruiting season has been the hardest to predict or analyze in history. Given how many prospects treat another concept – the […]

VU 71-UA 63: Nashville demons get the best of Bama once again

The likely focus of Avery Johnson’s practices this week. While it never really felt like it at the time, the stats show this game was there for the taking. Alabama shot a more-than-respectable 48.1 percent from the field and out-rebounded a taller, more athletic Vandy team 39-29. But the Tide blew it largely at the free throw line with an atrocious 7-for-20 effort, which doesn’t account for the foul shots Bama didn’t get to take after missing on the front end of multiple 1-and-1 opportunities. By contrast the Commodores grinded out a 22-for-36 showing at the line.

Championship wrap-up: Bama defied doubters to bring home title No. 16

There have been other Nick Saban-coached teams in Tuscaloosa that were expected to win championships; some did, some didn’t. Until it became obvious to everyone just how talented Alabama’s defensive front seven really was, the 2015 Crimson Tide weren’t really considered a title favorite in the preseason. This was going to be a blue-collar team with a lot of flaws. It might still be, but now, it is also champions.
